Although small in size - they are only 1-3cm in diameter! - arbutus are a delightful fruit that deserve much more attention!
Arbutus, also known as strawberry tree fruits, are red berries which are first and foremost visually distinctive, their spiky red surface dazzling the eye. After the 12 months they take to mature, becoming fully ripe typically in autumn, the golden flesh of these wonderful fruits emits a fragrant aroma, similar to that of anise, and has a refreshing, sweet taste, with a flavour reminiscent of an intriguing combination of fig, peach and kousa dogwod.
They are edible fresh, but are usually found preserved in tins or dried, especially because the mature fruit tends to bruise very easily, making transportation difficult - our arbutus canned are therefore the perfect way to enjoy these fruits!
Arbutus are most commonly used mostly for making jams, marmalades, jellies, sauces and yoghurts and even alcoholic beverages, such as the Portuguese medronho, a type of strong brandy! Many regions of Albania drink also prepare the traditional drink rakia from the arbutus fruit.
